Burford,
Woodstock and Blenheim Palace
We
start our day by travelling through the busy market towns of Moreton-in-Marsh
and Stow-on-the-Wold before arriving at Burford. This beautiful village
has a range of craft and antique shops set on the step tree lined High
Street which leads down to the medieval bridge crossing the River Windrush.
We
now travel just a few miles to Woodstock which is the doorstep to Blenheim
Palace. Here you will find an interesting collection of shops, galleries
and eating places. A walk through the Triumphal Arch into the Palace grounds
and you will experience magnificent views of the lake and parkland.
Blenheim
Palace was built for John Churchill, 1st Duke of Malborough, in recognition
of his great victory over the French at The Battle of Blenheim in 1704.
Blenheim is one of the finest private houses in the country with a collection
of tapestries, paintings, sculptures and fine furniture set in magnificent
gilded State Rooms. Winston Churchill was born here in 1874 and there
is The Churchill Exhibition which includes many of his personal belongings.
There
are over 2000 acres of parkland created by 'Capability' Brown as well
as the lavender and herb garden, the butterfly house and the famous Marlborough
Maze. Official
guided tours of the house take approximately 60 minutes.
On
our return journey we will stop at The Quiet Woman Antique Centre and
Tea Rooms.
